We're all Americans, right? Land of opportunity, home of the free, truth justice and the American way, that sort of stuff, right? Well, some times I wonder. Remember that little thing called the PATRIOT act? You know, the one that was passed in weeks after 9/11 to keep our "freedom"? That Allows federal officials to issue roving "John Doe" wiretaps, which allow investigators to listen in on any telephone and tap any computer they think a suspected spy or terrorist might use. Allows federal officials to wiretap or watch suspects if foreign intelligence gathering is a "significant purpose" for seeking a Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act order. The pre-Patriot Act standard said officials could ask for the surveillance only if it was the sole or main purpose. Makes it lawful to intercept the wire or electronic communication of a computer hacker or intruder in certain circumstances. Classifies any group of three or more as possible terrorism cells. Allows secret searches without the need for a warrant. Ands now it comes out that the President has been secretly doing this anyway to "protect" us? The list goes on and on and, unfortunately destroys our rights at the same time. Sounds like the same stuff that went on hundreds of years ago that this country was formed to fight against. Luckily, the Senate last week voted to not renew the ACT, however this morning I found out Congress extended it by a month. Chances are a little arm twisting will take place and it'll be a way of life from now on. Scary stuff. Why does it happen? Cause people don't want to get involved. They think life is OK and what can one person do to make a difference? Well, we can make a difference. Pay attention to the issues and vote accordingly. If we don't like them, vote them out and get in who we want. Someone who will protect our liberties instead of destroying them, piece by piece, while we sit back and watch it happen on TV.
